PETE EDOCHIE KIDNAPPED

The popular actor known as pete edochie was kidnapped around 3:30pm on sunday in onistha anambra state of nigeria. Three people were confirmed dead on the spot and about 20 people taken to the hospital who were serously injured.
Details were still foggy at press time, although the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka confirmed the development when Vanguard called him.He however, said that the state police command was still trying to get a clearer picture of the situation.
Vanguard gathered that shortly after the kidnap, somebody called his sister in-law, Mrs. Rita Edochie, who is also an actress, asking her to call her Edochie's number, adding that the number rang several times, but was not answered. It was then that the family got the information that three people were allegedly shot during the scuffle to kidnap him before the kidnappers were able to take him away.
State Police Commissioner, Mr. Uzor Amankulor said in a telephone interview that he immediately relocated to the area with a view to rescuing the popular actor, adding that he and his men have started combing the bushes in the area to rescue him. Pete Edochie, a devout Catholic, is considered one of Africa's most talented actors, by both Movie Awards and Movie Magic's Africa Magic Cable network.
Although a seasoned administrator and broadcaster, he came into prominence in the 1980s when he played the lead role of Okonkwo in an NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe's all time best selling novel, Things Fall Apart.Edochie descends from the Igbo people in Nigeria. He has two sons that take to his acting traits; Linc and Yul Edochie.Edochie got into radio broadcasting in 1967 as a junior programmes assistant after which he was elevated to the level of a Director. He was director of programmes, but doubling sometimes as Deputy Managing Director and occasionally acting as Managing Director.
He quit ABS because the government decided to politicise the affairs of their FM station, thereby resulting in the entire management being asked to move out, including him. He was to be the immediate successor to the MD but had to leave and enrol into the movie industry. Prior to that, he had featured in Things Fall Apart and had won an International Award.
The BBC flew into Nigeria to interview him for his role in Things Fall Apart. He lived with his wife and two sons in Enugu, Enugu State in south-eastern Nigeria. In 2005 the Actors' Guild of Nigeria placed Pete Edochie and several other actors, including Genevieve Nnaji, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Nkem Owoh, Ramsey Noah, Stella Damasus Aboderin,Chinwe Okeke and Richard Mofe Damijo on a one year ban from filming after they were said to have been collecting huge fees from producers due to their A-list celebrity status.
The ban placed on these actors was seen as doom in the Nigerian film business, but currently, the actors are back in filming.
EXPECT NOTHING LESS FROM NIGERIA,PLEASE LETS COME TOGETHER AND PRAY FOR THE SAFETY OF THIS GREAT MAN
LET PETE EDOCHIE GO,HE IS AN OLD MAN PLEASE

SIFAX BOSS' N27M GIFT TO STELLA DAMASUS TEARS OFFICE APART

Highly controversial movie idol, Stella Damasus-Nzeribe may not have felt the pandemonium that later aroused after has succeeded convincing her secret lover, Taiwo Afolabi who runs Sifax Shipping and other services to part with a large sum of money, running into N27 million cash to supply almanac, souvenirs etc for their customers some months back.As we were reliably informed by one of the very close confidantes of the shipping magnate, Taiwo Afolabi, Stella Damasus who has been facing a lot of controversies lately due to her unalloyed passion for joystick, we gathered, approached Taiwo, his secret lover that her company,
Mon Afrik, would not mind to take care of their almanac and other gift items for their esteemed customers, Taiwo, the lover boy, we were told, never raised a blink and she was said to have instructed Stella to bring forth her proposal. Before that time, the Corporate Department of the multi national company, Sifax Group of Companies was said to have started work on the gift items’ project and when Stella’s proposal was endorsed by their boss, they were alleged to be short of words and put a hold to the ongoing project and there was murmuring all over the place.
To worsen the whole case, Taiwo Afolabi we were told ordered Stella Damasus to be paid cash and they did. Information emanating from that Sifax Company reveals that all is not well between Stella and some top staff of the company, most especially those who run things at the corporate affairs department due to Stella’s game of wit. “Whenever she comes around, nobody gives her any recognition in the department as I learnt that she double-crossed them and this didn’t go down well on the people in that department. One of the workers told us.

”The spokesperson added that after coping with pressures from the press and responsibility of taking care of her three kids (two in UK and one in Nigeria), it dawned on Liz Benson to settle down with the widower, who is diligent as a man of God. “More so, as a lady evangelist, it is important for her to have a man in her life, and that is simply what she has done. Both of them are in love and have vowed to stay together at all time,” the spokesperson hinted.http://nigeriafilms.coml also learnt that the respected thespian, who has lost count of movies she had featured in, will stage a comeback to the movie industry as soon as her honeymoon is over.

It can still be a platform for her to glorify God and pass many moral lessons to the public as a role model. But the good news is that the husband has accepted and she will be back on screen soon,” her lawyer cum manager told http://nigeriafilms.com.The wedding ceremony was attended by Richard Mofe-Damijo and other crème-de-la-crème of Nollywood

FANS BLAST MERCY JOHNSON OVER $10.000 DRESS

Nollywood star, Mercy Johnson seems not be in the good book of many of her fans these days. This is because of what they tagged her inconsistent statements. Some of them who spoke with us, lamented that the Kogi State born actress speaks from both side of the mouth these days.

According to them, she even contradict herself in interviews..Aside denying her relationship with Ibrahim Damuje, the actress has been going about telling people that she bought a dress from South Africa for the equivalent of 10,000 dollar! It is a long white gown that cling to her sexy shape. When we saw her early this year wearing the red type of that same dress, she told us that she bought the dress in Germany and the price was no wear near the staggering amount that she reportedly bought it now.

A senior journalist told us last weekend that Mercy is trying to be in the big league by force. She is talented and sexy but I wonder why she go about telling people what she is not worth. Do you know that 10,000 dollar is more than a million Naira. So if two clothes in her wardrobe alone cost over 2 million Naira, that means her word rope would be worth more than a 100 million Naira. These girls should stop telling us nonsense”

A fan of the actress told http://nigeriafilms.com that many international artists wear dresses that are even more expensive but Nigeria is not there yet. "You people help them make noise about what they are not worth. The other day, someone said Omotola Jalade bought a 20 million Naira jeep.I mean, that is a white lie.It is not real man!" said the fan.

Personally i think everyone is being jealous of her success, the chic has the money so let her spend it,no one knows how much she's worth,so let the damsel be

FOLUKE AND I ARE NOT FIGHTING OVER SILFAX BOSS SAYS STELLA DAMASUS

Star actress, Stella Damasus Nzeribe has described the latest talk in town that she is having a running battle with Foluke Daramola, another actress over Taiwo Afolabi, the CEO of Sifax Group as false.
A visibly angry Stella told ShowbizNow during the week that the report in a national newspaper was irresponsible. ‘The writer did not even contact me or hear from me. Folake and I are not fighting at all.
As a matter of fact, we are both working on something. I’ll be anchoring her coming premier in August 16 at Sheraton Hotels. So, how can I be fighting her when I will be the MC of the premier of Wakati Eda, her movie?’She was the one that introduced the man to me and I have a business proposal with him. I consider the write-up a hatchet job to work against the business. I later learnt the writer said the story targeted Mr Afolabi, but putting my name in the story was irresponsible. I am a married woman and a responsible one. I cannot fight Folake Daramola over any man and we are not fighting. Anyway the man is her uncle.

KELVIN IKEDUBA.WHY I DO YORUBA MOVIES

He is one of the prominent faces of English genre of Nollywood. All of a sudden, he started appearing in Yoruba movies and almost overtaking some established stars. But there was a twist to it as some people started saying that he switched over to the Yoruba genre because he lost out in the English genre.

However, his subsequent appearances in some English movies put paid to the rumour. So, what could have led Kelvin Ikeduba to the ‘undervalued’ Yoruba genre of Nollywood? ‘To me, I believe that there is nothing like Yoruba artists or English actors. An actor is an actor; the only difference is the language barrier. I don’t think that it is bad for any English actor to do a Yoruba film, provided he or she understands the language.

There is already a move now to unite all the actors and actresses in the Nigerian film industry under one umbrella. I think this kind of organization should have been invented a long time before now, with the main aim of uniting actors and actress, irrespective of their language, tribes, qualification, background and all that. In America and South Africa, they have such group. It is just natural now that people are waking up to the reality.’

He went ahead to deny the fact that it was because he wasn’t getting roles that he strolled into the Yoruba genre: ‘I don’t know how other people get their jobs. But as for me, I don’t do Yoruba films because I am broke. I even get more English movies than Yoruba. So, it has nothing to do with being broke’.

Confirming what most people know, Kelvin says Yoruba movies have stronger story lines than English. ‘The truth of the matter is that the Yoruba pioneered the theatre industry. You can’t take it away from them, the Yoruba are more deep-rooted. In terms of story, the Yoruba have the originality of stories, but that doesn’t mean that the English movies don’t have stories and that does not mean too that it is all Yoruba films that are meaningful. Some are, in fact, too watery. There are some English movies that are watery too. So it is vice-versa. But to be sincere, the Yoruba have the originality in stories, because I believe it has to do with their tradition’.

On his growing up, Kelvin says he grew up a complete Nigerian as a result of his constant move around. ‘I am from Delta State; I grew up in a family of four, two boys, two girls. I live here in Lagos. I had my primary education in Lagos and my secondary education in Delta. I went to the University of Benin. So I’ve moved around. I am diversified and I am a blend of some many tribes’.

Kelvin started his acting career in 2000 and has remained a force to be reckoned with in his own way. He believes Nollywood is a stepping-stone to his ultimate dream, which is Hollywood. So, his acting in Yoruba movies is all in a bid to achieve his main goal. ‘Nollywood is just a stepping-stone for me to Hollywood. But I can't go to Hollywood without Nollywood. Basically, I will agree that they pay more in the English genre than in the Yoruba. But even in English that they pay more, I am not after the money, I am after where I am going. I just want to be recognized for the love of acting. God has always been there for me, so I have always been using the talent He gave me.’

Now that we all know why Mr Ikeduba has been a regular face in Yoruba genre, we will bury our insinuation and join our faith with him that one day, he will end up in Hollywood.

HOW STAR ACTRESS REMI ABIOLA DIED

Star actress and wife of the late politician MKO Abiola, Mrs Remi Abiola, who passed on last Wednesday is said to have died of lung cancer in America.Until her death, Remi was a top actress in the movie scene and her dominance was felt more in the Yoruba genre of the movie industry.
She relocated to America last year when she went for an award ceremony organised by The Third Eye, a publication that is now defunct. Remi was said to have stayed back in America after the award because she loved life there. She got a job and started working there, settling into life of an immigrant.
She reportedly slumped and went into coma last week. She was rushed to hospital where she was placed on life-support machine. She died Wednesday after the life support machine was unplugged, thereby throwing Nollywood especially, the Yoruba genre into state of deep mourning. She is survived by her family members and two children, out of which one is said to belong to late MKO Abiola.
Remi who used to work for Nigeria Airways as an air hostess, trained in United Kingdom as a stage actor at the Fielding School for Dramatic Arts. Her foray into movies started with television drama that was popular in her time in the 80s and 90s. She started home video in 1989. Her mother roles in Yoruba movie and apt delivery endeared her to many lovers of movies in the industry. She was a household name in the industry until her death. Her role as Pastor Adeboye’s mother in Covenant Church the movie that depicted the life of General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God endeared her to many.
Commenting on the death of the star actress, Mr Charles Novia, the producer of Covenant Church, described her death as devastating and a big shock.“Her death was a shock to me. It was devastating. I’ve known her since her days at NTA and she used to encourage me. She was a thorough professional and delivered her roles and lines well. She has featured in two of my movies, Covenant Church and True Love,” Novia said. For star actress, Rachel Oniga, Remi’s death was such a shock that she was short of words. “I don’t know what to say, you have to call me back,” she told us on phone.Association of Theatre Art Practitioners (ANTP), the professional bodyRemi belonged is said to be working out arrangements with her family members here in Nigeria to bring her body home.

"I HAVE NOT GONE TO UNIVERSITY BECAUSE OF MONEY" TERRY G SPEAKS OUT

Born Gabriel Amanyi to a deacon father and a choir mistress, Terry G is a young music producer and singer who has turned out several hits in the last few months. With a production outfit to his name and record labels on his trail, Terry G took Reporter, Gbenga Bada, into his world. What is the difference between Gabriel Amanyi and Terry G?Gabriel Amanyi is the responsible homeboy while Terry G is the entertainer, who doubles as a producer.

They are different names with different images but belong to the same person. You have been around for sometime but it appears everybody is now running towards you to produce or feature in their songs.

How did you get to where you are now?

I would say it took me two years and it started after I did a song as Terry G called 'Love is Sexy' with AZ. That was more like my introduction to the industry because after that people started giving me jobs. I had earlier begged for opportunities from the top shots then but no one allowed me or gave me that chance. But two years ago, I started doing my thing gradually.

How has the journey been so far?

It's not been easy. Nothing comes easy, if you are down for it and you are down for an aim, you should know that there would be different obstacles and tribulations but I was able to scale through and I thank God.

What was the your parents' reaction when you started?

I used to be a gospel singer and I had completed my gospel album, but due to lack of financial support, I wasn't able to release it. I then switched to commercial music, which was secular music to my parents, and I had problems with them because they didn't approve of it. I had to do secular music for the money because I couldn't just see myself roasting with my dreams going away. Sometimes you take personal decisions and as such, I left home and went to the street to do my thing and it turned out fine. Now, my parents are with me and everything is okay.

I Learnt that the only reason for your decision to go secular?

I never decided on that. It was while I was looking for a sponsor that I met Faze and he listened to one of my songs and said, 'let's do something together and I would help you build your career.' Along the line I changed and here I'm. One thing I believe in is change because it is the only constant thing in life. I had to do commercial music and before I knew it, I had started doing much of secular music.

Is there any possibility of you releasing a gospel album?

My forthcoming album is a fusion of secular and gospel tunes and the reason is because I have never for once forgotten God. He is the reason I'm here in the first place. You have been known to have done songs with several artistes and even videos but you only have one video and single to your credit.

How soon do you intend to pursue your own thing?

I have begun work on my album already and it's almost done. I have a couple of singles already and they are already on air, I intend to shoot more videos very soon. Already, I have singles like 'Free Madness,' 'Halleluyah,' 'Ko Jo', 'Everything Yapa' and 'My Ginger Skate.' The album would be out in a couple of months and I can tell you the videos would be out pretty soon.

Would it be correct to say that the delay in your album is a result of the work you are doing on productions by other people?

There is hardly time for me to focus on my personal work. It has not been easy though and I found that even if I have to do my own things, I rush through and I don't want that. I have a lot of people on my neck and it's not that the effort that I put in it gives me that creativity but the plus that God adds to it makes it what it becomes. So, the delay in my album has to do with the work I'm doing and a lot of people are expecting some good songs and I don't want to disappoint them. I have to take my time and be creative.

It's not an easy task succeeding as an artiste and a producer all at once, how have you been able to manage it?

I worked for Faze for two years and the process gave me the opportunity to learn so many things. When I started my own thing there was not much stress because I followed the game and I understood it. I try to juggle both but I enjoy production more than singing. I thank God for everything but what I care about now is my productions. I'm aiming higher and going into video shooting because I'm expecting my cameras very soon. I don't really care about the singing aspect that much now or as Terry G because there are several talents on the streets looking for someone to just give them the chance and that is what I intend to work on.You have several slangs on the streets and you have become the man many want to hear in recent time.

How do you get these slangs?

I don't write songs, my productions inspire the songs I sing. Even most of the artistes I produce for don't write their songs, rather, the productions inspire the songs they sing or later write. The beats I create determine what songs I sing. Aside that, my environment determines what I sing about and most of these slangs have been there, it's just that Terry G promoted them.

Why is that you feature in most of the songs that you produce?

It's not my fault. Most of these artistes don't bring songs. Everybody seems to be feeling me and they want a pinch of it, so they won't bring what they have but they just want that new thing that I can deliver on their songs. Most of them insist that I feature or throw a verse or two and when I refuse, they say ok, just say Terry G on the beat or just 'Free Me'.You have done so much with several artistes, who are now rocking the Nigerian music industry.

What is your relationship with them, especially Timaya, whose songs you produced?

Timaya and I are okay. But I think the fact about life is that everybody should be good. You find out that you trust people around you so much that at the end of the day when you need them they disappoint you. Anyway, he's my very good friend. Why have you stuck with up and coming artistes despite your long relationship with Faze?I have actually dedicated my time to the up and coming ones because I remembered that when I was working with Faze, the celebrities and big stars all knew me and I begged to work for them but they refused. It was through up and coming artistes that I was able to make it. So, I promised God that I would not relent in helping up and coming artistes. I have gotten offers from several labels, who want me now but I refused them because if I do, I won't have the opportunity to do what I want and had promised God. I believe working with up and coming artistes would make me last longer than with artistes that are already made.

Do you have any regrets since you started?

I don't have any regrets because one constant thing is change and it makes you learn lessons. I wish I had a camera and I was filming all that has happened as evidence. The fact is that if God is in support of whatever you are doing there will be no problems.

What was growing up like for you?

I have liked music right from my childhood days. I used to go to music schools to learn more about instruments and it all started from the church. My mother was a choir mistress and the only thing I did was to improve on myself and God wanted it to be this way for me. I'm still doing all I can to improve on what I have.Give us an insight into your background.I finished secondary school but have not been to the university due to my financial status. My mum is a choir mistress and my father is a deacon. I come from a family of four children, two boys and two girls. I'm the first child.

Would you say you have arrived in terms of wealth and status on the Nigerian music scene?

I've not arrived, I'm in a process to success because I believe that the day you claim success is the day God will claim it from you. So, all I can say right now is that I thank God for where I'm right now and He has everything in his hands and I never for once thought it would be as quick as it is for me at the moment, so I thank Him. It's not like I'm the best or something; it's just by His grace that I'm able to be where I am today.

MY HUSBAND THOUGHT I WAS A PROSTITUTE SAYS OGE OKOYE

Pretty Oge Okoye-Duru, for more than 10 years now, has been a Nollywood star. She has featured in not less than 40 movies. Following her roles in movies, Oge is often seen as one of Nollywood bad girls. But is Oge really bad? That was why Saturday Vanguard went after her, but it was frustrating. Twice she failed to show up as our guest actress for the week. But when she finally did, it was with great humility that pretty Oge Okoye-Duru shared her untold story with the Saturday Vanguard team when she stormed our corporate office, in Apapa, Lagos, last Tuesday’s cool evening. This is her story…

By Ogbonna Amadi, Entertainment Editor, Benjamin Njoku and Bridget Amaraegbu, Ebun Babalola

You look really good, beautiful as a matter of fact. Marriage has really changed your look?
My brother, I give thanks to God for whatever comes my way. It’s been a long way up to the top
How come Nollywood stars hardly marry themselves?
I don’t know. It all depends on where you find your own love. I didn’t meet mine in the industry. But it doesn’t really make any difference where you meet your partner. For me, I will say I’m fortunate. But what matters is that you live peacefully in life. Yes, I’m married.
Where’s your husband based?
He’s based in Holland.
But you still bear Oge Okoye your maiden name?

OKOYE... While I was in school. I was always going for auditions.
It’s not as if I chose to retain my maiden name. But the fact is, it’s the name I’m known with. But at the same time, everybody knows that I’m married. Apart from that, I try to include my husband’s name where it’s necessary. It’s just that I want to keep my marriage out of my career and public probing. My family is private and I want it to remain so.
You are hiding your husband’s identity?
Okay, I’m Oge Okoye- Duru. If you go to my face book, it’s boldly written there. It’s also boldly written on my recent movies.
And, where is he from?
My husband is from Imo State.
How did you meet him?
I met him on a set while shooting in a club. He thought I was a prostitute. According to him, he didn’t know we were shooting. When he saw me and what I was putting on, he was discouraged, but he told his friend, ‘Ah! Look at this fine girl, I’m going to bring her out of this life style and marry her. He thought I was a call girl.
Then his friend told him I’m an actress and we were shooting. They waited for us to finish shooting and one thing led to the other. We exchanged phone numbers and that was it.
Just like that?
Yes. It’s one thing to exchange phone numbers and it’s another thing to follow it up. I didn’t take him seriously at first, after all, people call my phone number every now and then, even those I don’t know how they got the phone number.
He kept calling and after, a while I saw that he was serious and decided to give him a chance.
What was growing up like?
I was over pampered as the only child. But I was not spoilt because my dad did not spare me whenever I did anything stupid. And my mum was always particular about the way I conducted myself. Such words like ‘come on sit very well’, or adjust your legs, you’re now a lady,’ were always coming from her. Though I felt a bit lonely as a child but growing up was fun for me.
Who were you closer to, Mum or dad?
It’s not as if there’s anything too special about it because I’m close to both my mum and my dad. But I will say my mum is very dear to my heart because she’s the only one who was always there for me. My dad was someone who was always on the road for one business trip or the other.
So, each time I was in difficulty, I always ran to my mum who provided me with refuge. Even when I told my mum I was going into the movies, she gave me all the support and encouragement I needed from her. And I must state here that those encouragements have helped me a lot in my career.
Right now, I’ve also decided to follow her footsteps by way of bringing up my son to learn to become his mother’s friend.
That way, he ’ll be able to tell you everything, and you’ll know when to discourage or encourage him from involving himself in certain things in life. As a child, I shared all my thoughts and feelings with my mum because we were very good friends, and today, I have no regrets doing all that.
Can you describe the relationship between you and your dad?
My relationship with my dad wasn’t all that special because of the nature of his job. He was into distribution, with Nigerian Breweries, Coca Cola, and other many companies as his major clients. He was also into this forklift business.
So, he was a very busy man. But the little time he spent with us was very memorable because he did his best to make-up for those times he wasn’t there for us. And he showered me with gifts because I’m the only child of my parents.
You were lonely?
Yes, I’m an only child. I’m this kind of a child whose parents would not allow to go out and play with other kids. My dad would always halt me, muttering, “ you’re not supposed to be running up and down like other kids.”
So, I was kind of restricted to our home alone. But trust me, I was sneaking out whenever my parents were not around to play with other kids in our neighbourhood. My parents restricted my movement to only going to school and attending extra-moral lesson. And from there to bed. This, I also think helped me a lot.
How?
It helped me to be focused and independent. I grew up knowing what I really wanted out of life.
You said you told your mum everything. Did you also tell her when you had your first boyfriend?
Not at all.
If you were really close to your mother, how did you break the news to her when you first saw that blood stain (menstrual flow)?
I didn’t really understand what it was at the first instance. So, I drew her attention and said to her, “Mum, come…come see. There’s something very important I want to tell you.”
And she gave me all the attention. I said, “See wound. I can’t make out where this is coming from.”
She asked if anybody touched me, and I replied no. She insisted wanting to know if somebody had touched me. But I maintained my stand, saying nobody touched me.
And she now had to speak in our local dialect, Idi sure na onwere onye meturu gi aka? ( Are you sure nobody touched you?”) and I replied, ‘yes mum’.
Then, she asked me to go and clean up. She later fixed me up. It was after few days that she sat me down and started counseling me. She told me that I have to be more careful and stop playing all those rough plays with boys of my age.

Oge Okoye
Though I didn’t get it immediately, with time, I got the message. I got to know that if I had to continue to play with those boys, I might end up getting pregnant and my dad would disown me.
At this point, did you dream of becoming a movie star?
I’ve always had dreams of becoming an actress. I still remember vividly how my mother told me that while I was in primary school, I used to show-off each time I put on my Cinderella clothes. And how I would always tell them, I wanted to become an actress.
But I didn’t believe in her story until much later. I also remember her telling me how I would spend several hours admiring myself before the mirror, while preparing to go to church. Even when it was time to go and further my education, I opted to study Theatre Arts. So, I’ve always wanted to act.
How’s your dad doing today?
Oh, he’ s late
And how old were you when he passed on?
I was between 15 and 17 years then. But I didn’t really know he was dead. He had problems with his lungs, I was told.

Was he into smoking and drinking?
(Laugh) Yes, he was but that wasn’t what killed him. We were told his food was poisoned and that was what affected his lungs. The poison was the slow-killer type.
How did you get the news that he was dead?
Somebody came to relay the news to me while I was still an undergraduate at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik) Awka. They said my father left a note for me and there was a family meeting and my attention was needed immediately.
When I got home, I was asking after my dad and the note he left for me. But later, one of my uncle’s broke the news to me.
Meanwhile, before that day, while I was still in school, I saw something like an apparition where my dad appeared to me dressed in white in my dream. And I was asking him so many questions but he kept staring at me and didn’t utter a word. It was so painful that he didn’t say a word to me.
So, after that came family pressure and all that.

How did you cope?
I must say it wasn’t really easy. But I became a matured woman immediately after my father’s death. Because I had to face a lot of challenges here and there. Some people who wouldn’t have had the guts to come closer to me were coming around and saying all kinds of nonsense. All that is now in the past and I wouldn’t want to bring back those ugly memories.
How did you find yourself in the movie industry?
While I was in school. I was always going for auditions. Though it wasn’t easy, I continued until I finally got a role one day which wasn’t even a lead. I was so happy the day I announced it to anybody who cared to listen. I was like, ‘oh finally, I’m going to become an actress’.
I continued getting involved in more auditions until I got a lead role in the movie called, “Spanner” which was by God’s intervention.
We’ve heard a lot about sexual harassment in Nollywood. Have you ever experienced such incident?
No. I’ve also heard about it but I don’t know if it exist. I’ve always been myself and I wouldn’t give into that.
Before you got married, did you at any point break anybody’s heart or vice versa?
(A long pause) Not at all. I was in a relationship which didn’t just work out. But nobody broke anybody’s heart here.
How much was your first pay?
Hmm, my first pay was about N9, 000. N10,000 in 2001.
And you were excited?
But it wasn’t really about the money. It was just the excitement. I was just happy because I was recognised among a lot of people that came for the same audition.
Most times, you flare up in movies. Is it the real Oge coming into play, or just a make- believe?
I do have a temper but I can handle it. These are two things. First, you being able to handle it. And you not being able to handle that temper. So, it doesn’t have anything to do with my roles. Because anytime I’m acting, it’s a different Oge.
That is not me. If I’m doing it that’s just the character. But if I’m out there, I’m just your humble Oge.Marriage has made me more focused, made me to be able to manage my temper more than ever and it has given me a sense of responsibility because now I’m responsible to a lot of people. My husband, my baby and others. You know, men are like babies.
So a woman should be able to know how to cajole her husband.
She should know when her husband is angry or happy, know when to raise issues that needs to be dealt with. Talk to him mildly, tease him with words like “you, I know what you want”. I do that a lot to my husband and I’m able to get what I want even when he’s angry. I have a lot of responsibilities now. In as much as I go on location, I try to make sure that everything is in place when I’m around.
How far did your first movie go?
After my first movie, it took a while before I got another role which I played a lead. The movie is called, “Spanner”. It was after featuring in that movie that I exploded. I can’t say precisely but I know it tried. I saw it as a starting point. My co-actors then encouraged me, and these are people I still look up to, like Charles Okafor.
The lead role I got for my second movie wasn’t for me. It was kept for Eucharia Anunobi. But something happened and she didn’t show up. The audition that day was tough because I was kept waiting for about five hours. After which Nkem Owoh just walked up to me and asked if I had done any movie before, and I said, ‘No, but if I’m given a chance, I’ll do it well’.
Jokingly, he said, ‘ can you play the character of my wife?’ I laughed and said, ‘yes, why not?’ After much drilling, they gave me the role.
What did that movie do for you?
Oh, it went far. Though the script wasn’t complete, initially, because while we were shooting, certain lines were being added but in the end, it came out very well even in the market.
That movie was like a turning point in my life. After that one, some cast and crew came looking for me with my picture from Lagos and I played the role of Sister Mary. From then, the sky became my stepping stone, and I’m still flying higher.
So, how did it help you financially?
It helped me to become independent financially. I didn’t have to run to anybody for any assistance.
While building up your career, did you at any point turned down scripts?
Oh, no! How could I have rejected any script at that time. I was just doing and feeling that I’m almost getting there. Just about four-five years ago, when we started taking a new dimension; changing the face of that Nollywood of yesterday to a new Nollywood .
We had to start doing good stories, production, quality and everything. So, I became very cautious of the kind of movies I do. Because these movies go very far, more than you can ever imagine. Today, I don’t just go and act any script. It has to be a good script for me to act.
Can you act nude?
Nude? Yes, I can act nude but the way our society reacts to such acts, I’m afraid I may not accept such role. I’ve not had such offers.
When you play romantic roles where you get kissed, do you feel aroused?
No, never. It’s all about getting the script right and it ends there.
If you have to rewind the hand of the clock, do you think you can still do some of those roles you did in the past?
If it’s a good story, why not.
What are some of those areas you think need correction in Nollywood?
I think we’re trying. Even for us to get to this level with the limited resources we have is miraculous. The equipments are still poor but we’re managing and I believe we’ll get there.
Some people have complained that it’s the marketers that affect the quality of movies…
I don’t really agree to that because it’s not the marketers that write scripts. The only thing they do it funding, they don’t even decide who plays any role. I think that decision is left for the script writer because he knows who can best interpret any role.
People also think that distribution frame work and censors board have been a problem….
Well, I will not answer that question because I’m not a producer my job is an actress is just to do a good interpretation of roles and get paid.
I thought the number of movies produced yearly has been cut down because of the censors board issue?
I don’t know about that because I’ve been on location since this year. As I speak to you now, I’m going on location tomorrow
In one of your interviews, you said you dreamt of acting in Hollywood. Have you actualised that dream?
Not yet, I’m still working towards that. I’ve not gotten an offer yet but if I have to do one, the money will have to be worthwhile.
Are you aware that there is so much crisis in AGN?
I’m aware but I don’t want to comment on that.
It has become a trend amongst actors and actresses to produce their own movies after a while. When are we expecting your own?
I’ve not really thought about that. May be I’ll think about it.
Tell us about the obstacles you went through on your way to stardom…
The only obstacle I can remember was the money because it wasn’t really worthwhile but I didn’t see it as obstacle because I was just doing it for the passion.
The second one is restriction. Acting makes you restricted from hanging out in certain places.
Then embarrassment, some people watch my movies and believe that’s the way I am. May be they watch a movie where I played a wicked role or something else, they just believe I’m wicked.
I remember walking on the road one day and one old Yoruba woman was shouting “you, Ashewo, husband snatcher” and I felt so embarrassed but people around tried to make her understand it was just acting and nothing more but she didn’t believe it.

BETWEEN PEKI AND OLU JACOBS

Veteran actor, Olu Jacobs, without mincing words, is a role model to thousands of upcoming actors, but if there is one budding actor that admires him greatly, it must be Michael Elusogbon, known as Peki.

Even though Peki, as the Osun State-born actor is fondly called, is still doing his stuff in the Yoruba sector of Nollywood, his future plan is to become an icon in the entire movie industry.“I adore him so much and hope to be like him someday. He is an actor with a unique talent, and his talent cannot be undermined,” he noted.NollywoodReel learned that Peki, who is a member of Royal Family Theatre Group, headed by Oreoluwa Adeseyoju and Kehinde Ogungbangbe, started his acting career in the church. He has however featured in movies like Elegiri and Jankariwo among others. When NollywoodReel met him recently, he said: “People should just watch out because it is my time to shine, and I thank God for bringing me this far.”

DRAKE FALLS AND COLLAPSES ON STAGE

Hip Hop recording artist and actor Drake is recovering after collapsing on stage in New Jersey Friday.According to Miss Info, Drake and Lil Wayne were performing “Best I Ever Had” when Drake was moving across the stage and did a spin move…he must have turned his already-injured knee while spinning, because Drake suddenly collapsed on the stage.

“He put his head down because he was in so much pain,” and then 4 guys ran out on the stage and had to carry him off. Lil Wayne was left onstage in a state of confusion. Sources say that Weezy then said to the stunned crowd, “Damn, I knew that n—a’s knee was bad, but I didn’t know it was that bad! I thought he was just in a wheelchair on T.V.”

At press time there was no word as to whether Drake would continue on the tour or sit out.Earlier this week, Drake told MTV News that he would not be performing a full set as planned on the anticipated tour, which also features Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Pleasure P, and more.

At one point he told MTV he did not want to let people down and would thus show his face but could not risk performing with injuries that also forced him to sit out on a planned BET Awards performance in June."I’m not doing my own set. That’s one thing I have to apologize to my fans about. It’s too much of a risk, if I hit that wrong turn (doing) 30 minutes every night. If I tear my ACL again, the doctors say I might not be able to walk again. I have to be cautious," Drake told MTV.Developing...

EMINEM THREATENS TO RELEASE PICTURES OF MARIAH CAREY

Eminem and Mariah Carey are at it again.

On Thursday, the rapper debuted a new song, "The Warning," slamming his ex and going into full detail about a sexual encounter they once had."Only reason I dissed you in the first place is because you denied seeing me.

Now I'm pissed off," he says before he starts his rap."You wanna hear something wick wack?/ I got the same exact tattoo that's on Nick's back," he says, referring to Carey's husband NicK also blasts Carey for mocking him in her latest music video, "Obsessed.""Oh gee, is that supposed to be me in the video with the goatee?

Wow Mariah, didn't expect ya to go b---s out./ B---h, shut the f--- up before I put all those phone calls out/ When you was wilding out/ Before Nick, when you was on my di--," he raps.

He then threatens to reveal personal pictures he has of the Carey. "Mariah, it ever occur to you that I still have pictures?" he asks. feud between the two began earlier this year after Eminem namedropped Carey in the track "Bagpipes From Baghdad" from his latest album Relapse.

Cannon later shot back on his blog, calling the rapper (who goes by the name "Slim Shady") "Slim Lamey." He added that Eminem is "still obsessed with my wife, the same female that wouldn't let him get to second base from 8 years ago." A month or so later, Carey got the last laugh by mocking Eminem in "Obsessed."

THANKS TO NIGERIA FILMS

CANCER KILLS REMI ABIOLA

Popular Nollywood actress and wife of the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO), Remi Abiola, died yesterday of lung cancer. The talented actress, who has been battling with the ailment for sometime now, was said to have been in coma for 10 days, before she eventually died in a New York hospital.
www.nigeriafilms.com gathered that the late actress discovered that she was suffering from the ailment about seven months ago, when she travelled to the United States of America, for an award ceremony. She is survived by two children, one of whom she had for the late MKO Abiola. His name is Kamorudeen.
Remi, who studied in England, started her acting career with stage performances in London in the 1970s.When she returned to Nigeria, she worked as a flight attendant at the defunct Nigerian Airways before taking acting as a full time profession.Speaking with www.nigeriafilms.com on her death this morning, the National President of the Association of Nigerian Theatre-Arts Practitioners (ANTP), Prince Jide Kosoko, described the news as an unfortunate one.“It is very sad. I never knew she was not in the country. I got to know that she was in coma about seven days ago,” Kosoko said, adding that “our colleagues in U.S. are currently making arrangements to bring her corpse home for burial.”

HAND OVER NOW,AGN MEMBERS WARNS EJIKE ASIEGBU

Members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), have urged their former national President, Ejike Asiegbu, to officially hand over to the newly appointed interim National President, Kanayo O. Kanayo.Since KOK, as the veteran actor is fondly called, was appointed to lead the guild on an interim capacity for a period of six months, Ejike has been running a parallel government, claiming that nobody can stop him.He has refused to surrender the guild’s properties in his possession, even as other stakeholders and the police have advised him to do so.
On Thursday last week, a peace meeting was summoned by the Iponri Police Division Area Commander, CSP Bashir Abdullahi, to find a lasting solution to the leadership tussle in AGN.Although the meeting was supposed to hold at AGN secretariat, it was eventually held inside the Iponri Police Command as a result of Ejike’s refusal to release the office keys.During the meeting, which was attended by over 100 actors and stakeholders, the aggrieved AGN members warned that for peace to reign in the movie sector, the embattled Ejike must handover.
Some of the prominent personalities that attended the meeting, which lasted for several hours, were Eddie Ugbomah, Zeb Ejiro, Emeka Ike, Kelvin Ikeduba, Chris Nwokobia, Ernest Obi, Prince Ifeanyi Dike, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Dickson Iroegbu, Hakeem Rahman, Emeka Rollas and many others.Expressing their grievances during the meeting, AGN members noted that if Ejike did not have hidden agenda, they see no reason why he should not hand over at a time the majority of the people he claims to be leading said they’ve had enough of him.Femi Ogedegbe, who was an executive member during Ejike’s administration, said: “The members said that they don’t want us again. So there is nothing we can do about it. I don’t understand why Ejike has been so adamant. After all, it is the same people who voted him in that are now saying he should leave.
So I see no reason why he should be adamant.”In his own remarks Zeb Ejiro advised that the voice of the people is the voice of God, therefore, Ejike should allow peace to reign in AGN.According to Emeka Ike, “I never knew that absolute power corrupts absolutely, but now I know it does. I don’t think Ejike is doing all these things alone, there are some saboteurs behind him.”NollywoodReel gathered that the aggrieved AGN members, who have embarked on series of protests, have promised a final showdown, if Ejike did not hand over the AGN properties in his possession on time. When NollywoodReel called Ejike on phone yesterday morning, he said “I don’t grant interviews on phone. We need to meet one of these days and discuss properly.”

MEAGAN FOX BANNED ONLINE, SITES GO FOX,FREE FOR ONE DAY

Is Megan Fox wearing out her welcome? A dozen male-centric Web sites are reportedly imposing a ban on the starlet - for one day, at least.
According to The New York Daily News' Gatecrasher, sites including Asylum.com, Ask Men, Just a Guy Thing, TheBachelorGuy.com and Double Viking have deemed August 4 as "a Megan Fox media blackout day."

"You can have too much of a good thing," AskMen.com's Editor-in-Chief James Bassil told the paper, "We're joining in the media blackout and giving our readers a one-day reprieve from the woman we've been drowning in all summer."
In addition to press around the world for "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," the Hollywood hottie has graced the covers of many major magazines over the last few months, including Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, Empire, Maxim, Elle and GQ UK.

Eric Rogell of TheBachelorGuy.com wants to shine the spotlight on a different young starlet, at least for a brief moment - but still admitted Megan has done wonders for his company.
"Listen, we love Megan. She's responsible for driving more eyeballs to our sites -- just by getting photographed walking down the street in a white T-shirt -- than any other celeb alive," he told the paper. "It's time to give another young actress a shot at the attention. We're taking a one-day break from covering Megan's latest nail polish color and instead promoting another 'Next Big Thing.'"
And which young Hollywood actress might be able to fill Megan's shoes for at least one day? According to Eric, it's the star of "The Unborn."

"My vote is for Odette Yustman," he added. "I call her 'The Poor Man's Megan Fox.'"

PARIS HILTON'S SEX SCANDAL, A BIG LESSON

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Tonight, MTV will screen the new documentary, "Paris, Not France," which highlights celebutante Paris Hilton's rise to fame.

"I think there are a lot of people that have misconceptions about me," Paris told Access Hollywood's Tony Potts in a new interview. "They assume I'm just a party girl and they don't realize there's a business behind it. I've created this over the past 10 years."

The documentary showcases Paris' high points, but it also looks into her lows - including her notorious sex tape, which she opened up about to Tony.
"Was the sex tape a [pivotal] moment in changing your life?" Tony asked.

"It was definitely very painful," Paris said. "When you trust someone and love someone -- for them to do that to you, it's really hard... It's something that bothers me everyday."
The tape, recorded by her ex-boyfriend, Rick Salomon, surfaced in 2003. And it took Paris' fame to a new level -- but for the wrong reason.
Paris dedicates a large portion of time to the scandal in her new MTV documentary, something she said was difficult.

"By putting it in the film, it was really hard for me to have it in there, because it's something I never discussed," Paris told Tony. "But I also think it's a big learning lesson, because I think a lot of girls, when they're in a relationship, they will love someone and trust them and maybe let them do that. I know that's happened to a lot of people... And you never know what they could do with it."

"Take me from that moment of what you were feeling and how you somehow turned it all around," Tony said.
"Well, obviously I was humiliated, embarrassed and in shock that it happened," Paris explained. "It wasn't my fault, it was something that someone did to me, so I've just learned to be a strong woman and nothing can hurt me at this point"

But beyond the sex tape scandal, the film reveals the stunning empire Paris has built, beginning with more home movies - some of Paris as a happy little girl.

"It's really fun to see myself when I was little and probably the part that touches my heart the most is watching my grandmother because she died a couple years [later] from breast cancer," Paris told Tony. "We were so close and every time I watch that part I just cry."

And the film also follows what Paris calls her dream - to turn into a business mogul.
"It's always been a dream when I was a little girl to do this," Paris told Tony.
"What are some of the [misconceptions] you really wanted to hammer home, and say, 'Look this is what you think, but this is what I am?'" Tony asked.
"Well, I think when people haven't met me and they just read certain things that aren't untrue, they might think that I'm spoiled, that I'm a brat, that I haven't worked for what I have when really it's the complete opposite. I've worked very hard for what I've achieved," Paris said.
